Letter from Leadership
As we begin another school year, it is only fitting that we reflect back on our rich history, as we simultaneously look forward to what is to come with the children who are here today. Overfield was founded in 1960 by Julia Hobart as The Overfield Nursery School, and was housed in the back of the Overfield Tavern Museum. That first class had just 12 students, and school was held at that location until 1989 when we moved to our current building. This house–a historic steel building from the 1930s–was the home of Edward and Martha Hobart, who were the aunt and uncle of Julia’s husband, William Hobart.
Many things have changed since that first class of 12; we now have around 155 students, 24 teachers and staff, and 65 years of experience! We serve not only preschool aged children, but also Toddlers as young as 18 months all the way up to 3rd grade children. We have added a vegetable garden, a bird blind (named The Bird Hide by the children), an apiary where we keep bees, an expanded building for our Primary aged children, and now a greenhouse–all of these built with significant parent involvement and support.
Our founder, Julia, always says: “times may change, but the needs of children do not.” We strive to protect the timeless experiences that we believe are the right of all children to enjoy, while simultaneously thoughtfully encountering the unique opportunities and obstacles that are part of being a child and a parent in 2025. In the spirit of that effort, we invite you to dialogue with us this Thursday, 9/18 at 6:30 pm at the first Overfield Family Partnership meeting of the year. We will explore some of the foundational facets of our school’s philosophy, and together will begin to delve into one of the most timely and pressing issues of our day: parenting in the digital age. We hope you will dialogue with us at this meeting–just one of the ways we hope to be in partnership with you this year!

Join Us at the First OFP Meeting of the Year!
This Thursday, September 18, at 6:30 pm, in the Gathering Place, we will hold our first Family Partnership meeting of the 2025-2026 school year. Meet other Overfield parents, find out what OFP is all about, learn a bit about Overfield’s approach, and engage in the first dialogue of our Parent Project of the year: parenting in the digital age. Overfield’s Program Lead, Beth Poronsky, will lead a facilitated discussion framing this relevant and multi-faceted aspect of parenting, crafting a roadmap for an area of inquiry that you are invited to participate in through opportunities that will be available throughout the year. Childcare for children ages 3 and up is provided at no cost. Please RSVP for childcare here; spots are limited, and need to be secured no later than noon on September 17th.
We hope to see you Thursday!
